The Malaysia Open 2027: badminton's season opener, in a new 11-day format

The PETRONAS Malaysia Open returns to Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil from 21 to 31 January 2027, opening the BWF World Tour season as a Super 1000, and stretching to eleven days for the first time.

The Malaysia Open is where the badminton year starts. As a BWF World Tour Super 1000, one of only four events at that level, it draws the full top ten in every discipline to Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, and the home crowd treats it as a national occasion. For 2027 the tournament stretches to a new 11-day format, running from Thursday 21 January to Sunday 31 January 2027, which spreads the early rounds out and gives the qualifying and first-round matches room to breathe.

Why the format matters

Under the old six-day shape, the first two days were a sprint of courts running from morning to midnight. Eleven days means fewer matches per day, later starts for the show courts, and a better chance of seeing the top seeds play twice if you can only make one weekend. It also means Kuala Lumpur's hotels fill in two waves: the first weekend crowd and the finals weekend crowd.

Getting there

Unifi Arena sits in the Bukit Jalil sports precinct beside TM Stadium Nasional. The Bukit Jalil LRT station, on the Sri Petaling line, is a short walk from the arena doors, and on finals days it is comfortably the fastest way in and out. The precinct's car parks fill early; the train does not queue.

Planning the trip

Stay in Bukit Bintang or KLCC for the city around the badminton, and ride the LRT out to the matches, or stay near Bukit Jalil itself if the tournament is the whole trip. Tickets for the Open sell through the official channels listed on the event page, and the finals weekend goes first. Dates are confirmed on the listing, checked against the official source.
