Malaysia with children
Theme parks in the hills and the suburbs, cable cars that are rides in themselves, aquariums and canopy walkways, and night markets that double as dinner and entertainment. Malaysia with a family is easy in the ways that matter.
Theme park days anchor most family trips: Sunway Lagoon for water and rides in one park, Genting SkyWorlds in the cool hill air, and Legoland Malaysia in Johor for younger children. The festive season is the perfect family evening: the Deepavali and Christmas lights, outdoors, spectacular at child height, and early enough to end before bedtime. Festival days give children the country at its most alive: the Thaipusam procession to Batu Caves, Chinese New Year in George Town, and the Rainforest festival in Kuching. Hill and island trips carry the quieter days: the Penang Hill funicular, the Langkawi cable car, and the island boats from Jesselton Point in Kota Kinabalu.
Convenience stores and malls are on every corner with milk, snacks and suncream at all hours, and children ride the LRT and MRT at concession fares with a Touch 'n Go card. The trains beat traffic with a stroller, every station has lifts, and the KLIA Ekspres has space for everything a family travels with. Heat and the afternoon rain are the real planning constraints: do the outdoor sights early, rest or swim through the middle of the day, and go out again for the evening markets. In the east coast monsoon, from November to February, some island boats stop, so island plans in those months earn a spare day.
The days out below book up in season or reward an early start; each card explains how that attraction is really booked.
The big theme and water park in Bandar Sunway: six parks in one, surf beach, slides and the scream park, in a former tin mine an easy LRT and BRT ride from the centre.
How to book: Tickets online; the multi-park pass is the standard buy. Weekdays are far quieter than school holiday weekends.

How to book: Tickets online or at the door; weekends queue, so book the slot ahead.
Search tickets and toursvia KlookThe outdoor theme park at the summit: nine themed worlds built for the altitude, with the rides running in air 10 degrees cooler than the capital below.
How to book: Tickets online or at the park gate. Mist and rain pause some rides, so keep the day flexible.

How to book: Timed tickets online from the official site or the platforms. The day's Skybridge slots go quickly, so book at least a day ahead, and note the towers close on Mondays.
Search tickets and toursvia KlookThe 421 metre tower on the Bukit Nanas forest reserve: an observation deck, a revolving restaurant and the glass Sky Box ledge for the photograph, above a patch of protected rainforest in the middle of the city.
How to book: Tickets online or at the tower base. Go on a clear morning for the longest views; the deck stays open late.
Search tickets and toursvia KlookOne of the steepest cable car rides in the world, from the Oriental Village to the summit of Gunung Machinchang at 660 metres, where the curved Sky Bridge hangs between the peaks over the rainforest.
How to book: Tickets online or at the Oriental Village; combo tickets add the SkyDome and SkyRex. High winds close the top station, so keep a spare morning.
Search tickets and toursvia KlookThe funicular railway up from Air Itam to the hill station at 833 metres: the view over George Town and the strait, the Habitat's canopy walkway and the colonial bungalows along the summit roads.
How to book: Funicular tickets at the lower station or online; the fast lane costs more and is worth it on holiday weekends. Go early for the clearest air.
