Where to stay

Stay where the event is.

The stay shapes the trip. Where you stay decides how far you walk (or ride) to the event or attractions, what you see on the way and how easily you get home through the crowds. So find what you are planning to do and let it set your dates, decide which area you want to be in before you look at hotels, and book early. On the big weekends, the Malaysia Open, the MotoGP and the festive season above all, the whole country travels and the well-placed rooms go first.

How booking around events works here

Malaysia's big travel windows are predictable: the Malaysia Open in January, the stadium concert run, MotoGP weekend at Sepang and the festive season fill the best-placed rooms weeks out, while the monsoon months are when the same hotels discount. Event stays add a venue to the plan: Unifi Arena and TM Stadium Nasional at Bukit Jalil, MITEC, the KL Convention Centre and Sepang's circuit each pull the sensible base towards a different line.

Stay near an LRT or MRT station in the Klang Valley and the city's distances stop mattering. The choice is between the KLCC and Bukit Bintang strip, with everything on foot, and a quieter base that costs you a ride each way. Decide by the evenings: festivals and concerts are night events, and the best base is the one you can ride home to on the last train.
