Penang's December peak weekend: the bridge marathon and the Penang Festival

One December weekend carries two Penang anchors, both on the mainland: the Penang Bridge International Marathon in the small hours of Sunday 13 December 2026, and the Penang Festival expo running 11 to 13 December at Seberang Jaya.

The weekend of 11 to 13 December 2026 is when Penang's year peaks, and unusually, both of its anchors sit on the mainland side of the state. The Penang Bridge International Marathon starts and finishes at Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan and runs out over the Second Penang Bridge; across the same three days, the Penang Festival, the state government's expo weekend, runs at Tapak Ekspo Seberang Jaya. George Town, over on the island, is where most visitors will sleep and eat between the two. The listings are the bridge marathon page and the Penang Festival page.

A marathon that starts at 1:30 in the morning

The bridge marathon is a night race, run in the coolest hours over a bridge closed to traffic for it. The full marathon flags off at 1:30am on Sunday 13 December, the half marathon at 3:00am and the 10km at 6:30am, all from Aspen Vision City, with the route crossing the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, the 24 kilometre second crossing between the mainland and the island. Around 25,000 runners are expected across the three distances. Entries for 2026 have closed (Malaysian fees were RM150 for the full marathon, RM140 for the half and RM120 for the 10km), so this is a weekend for the entered, their supporters, and anyone who wants to watch a field of thousands cross the sea in the dark.

The festival, with a caveat

The Penang Festival runs Friday to Sunday at the Seberang Jaya expo grounds: a state government showcase with free entry, listed on Tourism Malaysia's national events calendar for 11 to 13 December. One honest note: the organiser's own confirmation for this edition had not been published when we checked, so this site carries the festival as a tentative date. Treat it as a bonus on the weekend rather than the reason for the trip, and check the listing again before you travel.

Putting the weekend together

Stay in George Town for the food and the old town, and treat the mainland as two planned crossings: the expo at Seberang Jaya on the Friday or Saturday, and Batu Kawan in the small hours of Sunday, allowing real time for race-morning traffic. On the island days, the cards on the Penang attractions page cover a guided heritage tour of George Town and the combined Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill trip, which is the right pace for a marathon weekend when someone in the party is not running. December is George Town's busiest month, so book the island stay early.
