The SEA Games 2027 in Malaysia: four hosts, 43 sports, one September

Malaysia hosts the 34th SEA Games from 18 to 29 September 2027, opening in Kuching and closing in Kuala Lumpur, with Penang and Johor sharing the programme, and the ASEAN Para Games following in October.

The SEA Games are South East Asia's own multi-sport games, eleven nations and a programme that mixes the Olympic core with the region's own sports. Malaysia hosts the 34th edition from 18 to 29 September 2027, and it is doing it the Malaysian way: spread across the country, with Sarawak as co-host, the opening ceremony in Kuching and the closing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

Four hosts, one games

The programme of 43 sports is shared between Kuching and the Sarawak cluster, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor. That spread is the story of these Games: the region's own multi-sport games, deliberately split between the peninsula and Borneo, with the newest venues in Sarawak carrying a full share. The ASEAN Para Games follow from 17 to 23 October 2027 on the same footprint.

What it does to the calendar

September 2027 in Malaysia is the Games: twelve days in which the country's sporting attention, and a good part of its hotel stock in four cities, belongs to one event. For visitors it is the best possible reason to build a trip that crosses the South China Sea: opening week in Kuching, closing weekend in Kuala Lumpur, and Penang or Johor in between if the sport you follow is based there.

Following the detail

The full venue-by-venue schedule firms up as the Games approach, and the listing on this site carries the official source and the confirmed dates, updated as the organisers publish. Treat the Games as the anchor and the rest of Malaysia's September calendar, the Malaysia Day celebrations land on 16 September, two days before the opening ceremony, as the frame around it.
