Things to do in Kuching.
Sarawak's capital on the Sarawak River, and the base for the state's closest national park: Kubah, in the Matang Range 20 kilometres west, is a day-trip park by day and frog country after dark.
Kubah National Park
The national park in the Matang Range 20 kilometres from Kuching, under the three sandstone peaks of Gunung Serapi, Gunung Selang and Gunung Sendok that show above the city: 2,230 hectares of dipterocarp and kerangas forest managed by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, known as the world of palms and rich in amphibians, with waterfalls and well-marked trails. By day it is a favourite local day trip; the park itself is a daytime place, and what you book below is the way in after dark.
How to book: Day entry is at the park gate, and the park runs no walk-up night programme. The bookable route after dark is the guided night walk below: about four hours with a local naturalist, along the park road to the frog pond, where the park's frogs and other night wildlife come out. Book ahead; the walk runs in small groups.
